Forest Spirit

***You may purchase an add free pattern in PDF format here***

The Forest spirit.
He is a spirit of light, who loves and protects the forest and all living creatures.
He is very cute and kind but very very shy. It is really lucky to see him.
I believe he will make a great fit into your home and life.

  • This pattern is written in US terms
  • Level of difficulty: beginner

Materials:

  • Yarn
    ⋆ “Premier Parfait Chunky”, #6, Super Bulky weight (100% Polyester; 100 g/ 3.5 oz per 120 m/ 131 yds )
    Color: toffee – 55 g/ 1.95 oz – 66 m / 72 yds
    ⋆ “Gazzal Baby cotton”, #2, Fine/Sport weight (60% Cotton 40% Acrylic; 50 g/ 1.76 oz per 165 m/ 180 yd)
    Color 1: black3 g / 0.11 oz – 10 m / 11.3 yd
    Color 2: white9 g / 0.32 oz – 30 m / 33 yd
    Color 3: red2 g / 0.07 oz – 6.6 m / 7.2 yd
    Color 4: purple2 g / 0.07 oz – 6.6 m / 7.2 yd
    Color 5: blue2 g / 0.07 oz – 6.6 m / 7.2 yd
    Color 6: yellow3 g / 0.11 oz – 10 m / 11.3 yd
  • Yarn needle
  • 3.5 mm hook for the body and 2.25 mm hook for other details
  • Scissors
  • Polyester or other filler you usually use
  • Contrasting yarn (or stitch markers) to distinguish the beginning and the end of each row
  • Pins

Measurements:

If you use the specified yarn and hooks, your toy will be 7 inches (approximately 18 cm) tall. Note that your toy may be a different size if you use different yarn and hooks.

Gauge:

14 rows x 15 sc = 4 inch square (“Premier Parfait Chunky”)

Notes:

  • I suggest using my second method to make a Magic ring (link in abbreviations and techniques). Velvet yarn may be difficult to work with, this will help to tie the MR easier (This suggestion is made upon my personal experience. You may make a MR any way that works for you).
  • It might be difficult to crochet all parts with the same tension. Do your best to crochet the body tight in order for the finished toy to look like mine.
  • Work in continuous rounds using contrasting yarn or a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.
  • [ ] – Repeat instructions between brackets the number of times indicated
  • ( ) – Total number of stitches at the end of each round.
  • Crochet the body top to bottom.
  • Do not stuff the mushrooms too tight. The base of each mushroom should be flat for easier attachment.
  • When making details, ch-1 is not counted as a sc
  • If you use “Bernat Blanket Yarn”, I suggest to use yarn weight #3 for the details.
  • When making the eyes, I found it more practical to backstitch around the eyes first and then attach them by picking up every other or every third stitch. However, as per pattern testers, they found it more comfortable to backstitch around the eyes while attaching them.

Abbreviations and techniques:

  • rnd(s) – round(s)
  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • inc – increase: 2 sc into the same stitch
  • dec – decrease: crochet 2 sc together into front loops
  • st(s)- stitch(es)
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • BLO – back loop only
  • MR – Magic Ring (use second way)
  • pull up a new color (when making eyes) – insert hook into the next st, pick up new color and pull through loop on the hook.

Fasten off, leaving a 6 inch (15 cm) tail.
Thread the yarn into a yarn needle and weave into the front loop of each st around, then pull the end to close the hole. Secure the yarn (I pull the yarn through the head, then through a couple of sc) and then cut off.

Eyes

I suggest using a thread as a stitch marker here and not to remove it until each eye is complete (It will be used as a guide to make the glints in the eyes).
I am using a different color yarn in this part instead of color 1 (black) so the stitches are more visible.

With color 1 (black) and 2.25 mm hook

Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6 sts)
Rnd 2: [Inc] 6 times (12 sts)
Rnd 3: [1 sc, inc] 6 times (18 sts)
Rnd 4: [Inc, 2 sc] 6 times (24 sts)
Rnd 5: [3 sc, inc] 6 times (30 sts)
Rnd 6: 1 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc, 1 sc, 3 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 4 hdc;
2 hdc in next st, 3 hdc, 1 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc, 3 sc (36 sts)

Rnd 7: 9 sl st, insert hook into next st, pull up color 2 (white) yarn, sl st in next st, inc, 5 hdc;
2 hdc in next st, 5 hdc, inc, insert hook into next st, pull up color 1 (black) yarn, sl st in next st, 10 sl st (39 sts)

Left eye

Note: In rnd 8, crochet in BLO of all color 1 (black) sts.
Rnd 8: 8 sl st, insert hook into next st, pull up color 2 (white), inc in next st, 4 sc, inc, 6 hdc, 2 hdc in next st,
5 sc, inc, insert hook into next st, pull up color 1 (black), 10 sl st (43 sts)

Do not fasten off. Cut off color 1 (black) yarn leaving a 17 inch (43 cm) tail and pull it up.
Cut off color 2 (white) yarn leaving a 33 inches (84 cm) tail.
Thread color 1 (black) tail into a yarn needle. Insert needle (from bottom to top) under both loops of the first sl st of previous rnd; insert needle into the second to last sl st (into the middle, where the tail comes from) and come out on the back of the eye.

Insert needle (from back to front) into back loop of the first sc on the right and backstitch around, in the back loops, till you reach color 1 (black).

Insert color 2 (white) tail into the yarn needle and backstitch the other half of the eye.

To make a glint:

1) Insert needle (from back to front) into the sc on the right side of the contrasting yarn of the 4th rnd.
2) Insert needle (from front to back) into the st next to the contrasting yarn 2 rnds below.
3) Repeat steps 1 and 2 two more times.
4) Insert needle into the sc on the left side of the contrasting yarn of the 5th rnd.

5) Insert needle (from front to back) into the st one rnd below.
6) Repeat steps 4 and 5 one more time.
7) Insert needle (from back to front) into one of the closest backstitches.

Do not fasten off.

Right eye

Note: In rnd 8, crochet in BLO of all color 1 (black) sts.
Rnd 8: 9 sl st, insert hook into next st, pull up color 2 (white), inc, 5 sc, 2 hdc in next st, 6 hdc, inc, 4 sc, inc, insert hook into next st, pull up color 1 (black), 9 sl st (43 sts)
Do not fasten off.
Finish off like the left eye. Note, the small glint will be on the same side of the contrasting yarn as the big one:
1) Insert needle (from back) into the second st of the 4th rnd, on the right of the big glint.
2) Insert needle (from front) into the st one rnd below.
3) Repeat steps 1 and 2 one more time.

Toadstool mushroom

Stem:

With color 2 (white) and 2.25 mm hook

Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6 sts)
Rnd 2: [Inc] 6 times (12 sts)
Rnd 3: [Sc, inc] 6 times (18 sts)
Rnd 4-5: 18 sc around for the next 2 rnds (18 sts)
Rnd 6: [1 sc, dec] 6 times (12 sts)
Rnd 7: 12 sc around (12 sts)
Start filling.
Rnd 8: [Dec] 6 times (6 sts)
Keep on stuffing while crocheting the next 4 rnds.
The opening might be tight, I widen it with the handle of my hook and add tiny bits of stuffing after every rnd.
Rnd 9-12: 6 sc around for the next 4 rnds (6 sts)
Rnd 13: [Inc] 6 times (12 sts)
Rnd 14: [1 sc, inc] 6 times (18 sts)
Rnd 15-18: 18 sc around for the next 4 rnds (18 sts)
Fasten off, hide the end and stuff the stem. Roll down the edges by 4 rnds.

Cap:

With color 3 (red) and 2.25 mm hook

Rnd 1: 5 sc in MR (5 sts)
Rnd 2: 4 sc, inc (6 sts)
Rnd 3: 6 sc around (6 sts)
Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] 2 times (8 sts)
Rnd 5: 7 sc, inc (9 sts)
Rnd 6: [2 sc, inc] 3 times (12 sts)
Rnd 7: 12 sc around (12 sts)
Rnd 8: [3 sc, inc] 3 times (15 sts)
Rnd 9: 15 sc around (15 sts)
Rnd 10: [4 sc, inc] 3 times (18 sts)
Rnd 11: Inc, 17 sc (19 sts)
Rnd 12-13: 19 sc around for the next 2 rnds (19 sts)
Do not fasten off.
Thread approximately 23 inches (58 cm) of color 2 (white) yarn into a yarn needle, and secure on the inside of the cap (I tie free ends on the inside). Make random stitches at length of sc sts (starting at the top) all over the cap.

Step 1:

Place the cap over the stem and sc around. Do not stuff the cap.
The cap should be tight and the stem may not fully fit in. However, if it is too tight that you can’t place it over the stem at all, you may need to stretch it a little and/or crochet an additional rnd of 19 sc.
Sc around attaching both parts by picking up first cap sts and then stem stitches.
Fasten off and hide the end.

Step 2:

Thread approximately 8 inches (20cm) of color 2 (white) yarn into the yarn needle. (The thinner, the better. I split mine to get a single strand).
1) Insert needle into the base of the stem and come out from the middle of the cap, just above the stem itself, hiding the thread on the inside of the mushroom.
2) Insert needle into the next st of the cap and come out from a base st next to the original one.

This will secure the cap, so it doesn’t pull up.
Repeat on the other side of the mushroom.
Tie 2-3 knots (NOT TOO TIGHT, just to make sure the knots are not loose) on each side and hide the ends.

Rnd 6: [6 sc, dec] 2 times (14 sts)
Rnd 7: 2 sc, dec, 5 sc, dec, 3 sc (12 sts)
Rnd 8-9: 12 sc around for the next 2 rnds (12 sts)
Rnd 10: [Inc] 12 times (24 sts)
Rnd 11: 24 sc around (24 sts)
Fasten off, hide the end and stuff the stem.

Do not fasten off.
Finish with steps 1 and 2 from the toadstool cap instructions.

Rnd 9: 4 sc, dec, 7 sc, dec, 3 sc (16 sts)
Rnd 10: 16 sc around (16 sts)
Rnd 11: [1 sc, inc] 8 times (24 sts)
Rnd 12: 24 sc around (24 sts)
Fasten off, hide the end and stuff the stem.

Cap:

With color 5 (blue) and 2.25 mm hook

Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6 sts)
Rnd 2: [Inc] 6 times (12 sts)
Rnd 3: [3 sc, inc] 3 times (15 sts)

Rnd 5: [Inc, 2 sc] 6 times (24 sts)
Rnd 6: 24 sc around (24 sts)
Do not fasten off.
Place the cap over the stem and attach both parts with sc around.
You will
NEED to stuff this cap while attaching.
Crochet an additional rnd of sc.
Finish off with the step 2 from the toadstool cap instructions.

Flowers (make 5)

You can make them any color you like. I made 3 of color 2 (white), 1 of color 4 (purple) and 1 of color 5 (blue).

With Color 5 (blue) and 2.25 mm hook

Crescent moon (make 2)

With Color 6 (yellow) and 2.25 mm hook

Row 1: Ch 27+1 (chain a little bit loose or use a hook 1/2 size bigger).
Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 2 sl st, 2 sc in next, 2 sc, 2 sc in next st;
2 hdc, 2 hdc in next, 2 hdc;
2 dc in next st, dc, 2 dc in next st;
2 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 2 hdc;
2 sc in next st, 2 sc, 2 sc in next st; 3 sl st (35 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 4 sl st, 7 sc, 3 hdc, 7 dc, 3 hdc, 7 sc, 4 sl st (35 sts)
Fasten off the first moon and cut off.
DO NOT fasten off the second moon, leave a 30 inch (76 cm) tail.
You may leave a 50 inches (127 cm) tail instead if you are OK with working with a long thread.
I’m not, so I will use a new piece of yarn to attach the moon to the body.
Place both parts, wrong sides together, and sew around with a whip stitch. Give it shape if needed.

Assembly

Pin the eyes between the 7th and 16th rnds, 2 sc apart, and tilt towards inside at about 30°-45° angle.
I like it more, when the small glints are placed towards inside.
Attach the eyes to the body along the backstitch line of the top (black) part and along sc sts on the bottom (white part), using running sts and picking up every other st or every third st.
Do not stitch too tight.

Pin the crescent moon above the left eye (do not place its corner too close to the eye, there will be flowers hanging).
Pin the flowers to the body where you want them to hang.
Take 5 stitch markers and mark the stitches on the moon where the flowers will hang from.

Cut 5 pieces of color 2 (white) about 6 inches (15 cm) long.
Depending on your experience and comfort level, you may either unpin the moon and flowers to attach them together; or unpin each flower and attach it while the moon is attached to the body:
1) Thread the yarn into the yarn needle and secure it on the back of the flower.
2) Insert needle (from top) into a st marker on the moon, pull the yarn to the desired length and secure it on the back of the moon.

Repeat with the rest of the flowers.
Unpin and hide all ends.

Attach about 19 inches (48 cm) of color 6 (yellow) yarn to any corner of the moon.
Pin the moon back, along with the mushrooms, to determine the best position for all details.
There is no certain position to attach the details. I just like when they are close to each other.

Once you are satisfied, unpin the mushrooms (if needed) and attach the moon, by picking up body sts and then every other whip st.
Pin the mushrooms back (if they were removed) so they form a triangle.
Secure 20 inches (50 cm) of color 2 (white) yarn on the bottom of any mushroom and attach the mushrooms to the body.
When finished, secure and hide the tail.

Done! Congratulations on your new toy!
Please share your toys using #BaymoonCrochet. I’d love to see your creations.
Happy Crafting,
Tanya.
