Going to a fiesta? Put on a sombrero and take him with you, he knows how to make an impression.
Put on a top hat and he makes a nice resemblance of Batman’s enemy: The Penguin =)

Rnd 2: [Inc] 6 times (12 sts)
Rnd 3: [1 sc, inc] 6 times (18 sts)
Rnd 4: [Inc, 2 sc] 6 times (24 sts)
Rnd 5: [3 sc, inc] 6 times (30 sts)
Rnd 6: 1 sc, inc, [4 sc, inc] 5 times, 3 sc (36 sts)
Rnd 7: 4 sc, inc, [5 sc, inc] 5 times, 1 sc (42 sts)
Rnd 8: 1 sc, inc, [6 sc, inc] 5 times, 5 sc (48 sts)
Rnd 9-23: 48 sc around for the next 15 rnds (48 sts)
Rnd 24: [6 sc, dec] 6 times (42 sts)
Rnd 25: 2 sc, dec, [5 sc, dec] 5 times, 3 sc (36 sts)
Rnd 26: [4 sc, dec] 6 times (30 sts)
Rnd 27: 1 sc, dec, [3 sc, dec] 5 times, 2 sc (24 sts)
It’s time to start stuffing the body.
Since this is the bottom part, it is OK for it to be flat, not round.
Rnd 28: [2 sc, dec] 6 times (18 sts)
Rnd 29: [1 sc, dec] 6 times ( 12 sts)
Rnd 30: [Dec] 6 times (6 sts)
Fasten off, leaving about a 6 inch (15 cm) tail.
Thread the yarn into a yarn needle and weave into the front loop of each st around, then pull the end to close the hole. Secure the yarn (I pull the yarn behind a couple of sc and then through the head) and cut off.
Beak:
With Color 1 (Light pink)
Row 1: Ch 2, 1 sc in 2nd loop from hook (1 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 3 sc in same st (3 sts)
Row 3-8: Ch 1, turn, 3 sc across for the next 6 rows (3 sts)
Row 9: Ch 1, turn, sc3tog (1 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail, about 22 inches (57 cm), and hide the short end.
Thread the yarn tail into a needle. Fold the beak in half so the end with the yarn tail is one row shorter than the other end. Move the tail two rows up by weaving the yarn up the shorter side. Sew the edges together up to the fold, about 2-3 stitches.
Bring the thread to the other side by inserting the needle in a corner and pulling it under a folding line.
Sew the edges together, starting at the middle and working your way up to the fold, about 2-3 stitches.
Flippers (make 2 of each part):
First part
With Color 1 (Light pink)
Row 1: Ch 3, 2 sc in second loop from hook, 2 sc in next st (4 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 4 sc across (4 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, inc, 2 sc, inc (6 sts)
Row 4-5: Ch 1, turn, 6 sc across for the next 2 row (6 sts)
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, inc, 4 sc, inc (8 sc)
Row 7-9: Ch 1, turn, 8 sc across for the next 3 rows (8 sts)
Fasten off leaving a 27 inch (69 cm) tail.
Second part
I am using a different color yarn in this part instead of color 1 (light pink) to show the contrast of the two colors better.
To change colors, refer to the “How to change yarn color” instructions in the Special Stitches section. After changing colors at the beginning of the row, carry and crochet over the color 1 (light pink) yarn until the end of the row. When changing to the last pink single crochet of each row, keep the white yarn behind your work and do not crochet over it with the pink.
With Color 1 (Light pink)
Row 1: Ch 3, 2 sc in second loop from hook, 2 sc in next st (4 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, change to color 2 (white), sc in next st, change to color 1 (light pink), sc in next st (4 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, change to color 2 (white), sc in same st, 2 sc, change to color 1 (light pink), sc in same st (6 sts)
Row 4-5: Ch 1, turn, change to color 2 (white), sc in next st, 2 sc, change to color 1 (light pink), sc in next st for the next 2 rows (6 sts)
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, change to color 2 (white), sc in same st, 4 sc, change to color 1 (pink), sc in same st (8 sts)
Row 7-8: Ch 1, turn, change to color 2 (white), 5 sc, change to color 1 (light pink), sc in next st (8 sts)
Row 9: Ch 1, turn, 8 sc across (8 sts)
Fasten off leaving a short tail.
Move the two white yarn tails to the backside of the work. Using a needle or your hook, pull the top white yarn tail through the stitch on the right, one row above.
Pull the lower white yarn tail through the two white stitches on the left, one row above.
Secure white ends. I usually tie them together to save time. If you do, make sure to not tie them too tight so the flipper doesn’t lose it’s shape.
Place both parts of wrong sides together and sew around the edges.
Belly:
With Color 2 (White)
Row 1: 5 sc in MR (5 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, inc, 1 sc, {sc, hdc, sc} in next st, 1 sc, inc (9 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, inc, 3 sc, {sc, hdc, sc} in next st, 3 sc, inc (13 sts)
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, inc, 4 sc, hdc, 3 hdc in next st, hdc, 4 sc, inc (17 sts)
Row 5: Ch 1, turn, inc, 3 sc, 4 hdc, 3 hdc in next st, 4 hdc, 3 sc, inc (21 sts)
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, inc, 7 sc, 2 hdc, 3 hdc in next st, 2 hdc, 7 sc, inc (25 sts)
You may cut off the white thread now, so it is not on your way. Just make sure to leave about a 13 inch (33cm) long tail.
Change to color 3 (Yellow)
Row 7: Ch 1, turn, inc, 8 sc, 3 hdc, 4 hdc in next st, 3 hdc, 8 sc, inc (30 sts)
Row 8: Ch 1, turn, 3 sl st, 11 sc, [inc] 2 times, 11 sc, 3 sl st (32 sts)
Fasten off and weave in the yellow ends.
If the increases of the last row came out a little to the side, stretch the belly, so they are right on top, so the piece is symmetrical.
Eyes (make 2):
With Color 5 (Black)
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6 sts)
Change to color 4 (Green)
Rnd 2: [Inc] 3 times, sl st, change to color 2 (white), 2 sl st (9 sts)
Rnd 3: [Inc, sc] 3 times, inc, sl st in next st (last sl st of the previous rnd is left unworked) (12 sts)
Fasten off and cut all yarn, but leave a long white tail.
Thread the white tail into a needle. Insert the needle into the MR (from the back) and then insert it into the side stitch where the color 4 (green) increase comes from.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail 15 inch (38 cm).
Repeat the same with the second eye but insert a needle into an opposite side stitch where the color 4 (green) increase comes from.
Secure all ends on the backside of the eye, except for the white, and cut them short. I usually tie knots on the back, which makes the eyes pop a little.
Feet (make 2):
With Color 1 (Light pink)
Rnd 1: Ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook, 6 sc, 3 sc in next ch, 6 sc, 2 sc in next st (18 sts)
Rnd 2-3: 18 sc around for the next 2 rnds (18 sts)
Rnd 4: 17 sc, dec (decrease stitch takes an extra stitch of the following round) (18 sts)
Rnd 5: 7 sc, dec, 7 sc (1 sc is left at the end of the rnd. This will become the 1st st of the next rnd) (15 sts)
Rnd 6: 16 sc around (16 sts)
Rnd 7: [Dec, 6 sc] 2 times (14 sts)
Rnd 8-9: 14 sc around for the next 2 rnds (14 sts)
Sl st in next, fasten off, leaving a 25 inch (63 cm) tail.
Sew the edges together (6 sts).
Assembly:
It’s time to assemble all the parts together. First, attach all the details to the body using pins so you can move them around until you are satisfied with how the penguin looks.
1) Attach the belly between the 12th and 24th rnds from top (right before the increases). Keep in mind the body is turned up side down, so you need to count the rnds from top to bottom.
Make sure the 2 top sts of the belly (inner sts of both increases) are symmetrically aligned.
2) Attach the eyes between the 9th and 15th rnds from top, with 1-2 sc in between, about 0.5 sc close to the belly. In my opinion, the closer they are, the better.
3) Attach the flippers (white side in) between the 14th and 16th rnds from top, about 5-6 sc from each side of the belly.
4) Attach the feet between the 2nd and 6th round from bottom, about 1 sc apart at the base and about 4 sc near the belly line, so they point in different directions. Also, make sure they are located symmetrical to the belly.
5) Attach the beak between the 6th and 8th rows of the belly.
Once you are satisfied with where all the details are located, sew them to the body, one by one, following the instructions below.
Thread the white tail of the belly into a needle and sew the bottom white part to the body.
When done, secure the yarn behind the belly and cut off.
Take a new length of color 3 (yellow) yarn about 35 inches (89 cm), secure it behind the belly and sew the yellow part of the belly to the body starting at the bottom, moving to the corner, then along each side of the belly and finish on the bottom of the other side near the white part.
Attach the eyes, flippers and the beak the same way, sewing around each part.
Attach each foot starting at a corner, moving along the side to about half of the foot (where the belly starts).
Then move to the inner side, attaching the foot horizontally.
Continue sewing from the middle of the foot, around the back, and finish at the point where you started.
Top hat:
While making this hat, I will show you how to change the colors so it’s less visible.
You may also click here to check out my post where I show these steps with different yarn colors and the stitches may be easier to see.
